If you’ve been here a while, you know that last May I got married! While life didn’t change too much post wedding – since we had already lived together and such – there were still some housekeeping things that we needed to take care of. Today I wanted to talk more about the steps we’ve taken over the past year and give you some resources to help in the process.
Explore Life Insurance Options
Insurance is probably one of the more boring things that need to be addressed when it comes to being a newlywed. There is so much information out there and it can be hard knowing where to begin. Consider checking out Fabric by Gerber Life which offers life insurance without a medical exam. This allows you to *potentially* remove one step out of a tedious process!
Revamp Your Budget
We’ve always *attempted* to keep a budget. However, over the past year especially we’ve ramped up and revamped our budget and check in weekly. It is always important to keep a realistic budget compared to your income and keeping a budget in general can be very stressful. We use the app EveryDollar which has made things really simple and help us stay on track. I especially like how it makes a pie chart of your budget giving it a visual element.
Change Your Name
If you plan to change your name after getting married it can be confusing and a lot of work! I personally never changed my name and don’t have any plans to (who else thinks Grant and I should BOTH hyphenate our names?). However, if I were changing my name I would definitely look into NewlyNamed. NewlyNamed is essentially a box that can be delivered right to your door that gives you all of the literature and tools you need to change your name as a newlywed. Discuss Investing
Everyone goes into marriage at different times of their lives – no two couples’ journey look the same. Some individuals may have been investing for years, other may not and have no intentions to. One thing to discuss if you haven’t is your investing plan. Do you want to explores stocks? Investment properties? Something else? Check out Investor.gov for more resources on investing.
Update Your Marital Status
Updating your marital status takes place in more places than just Facebook. You may need to update your marital status with your insurance company, your bank, your payroll, etc. Check out this post to see some other places that information may need to be updated.
