Over the past year or so Mahjong has been all over my social media! I’ve seen countless people I follow playing and I have really wanted to get in on the fun. Unfortunately, living in Western PA there really aren’t any instructors here like there are in the south. I was thrilled when a local store, The Picket Fence, announced they were hosting the ladies of Dallas Mahj Club to have a 101 and 102 class!
Going alone to classes was really out of my comfort zone, so I’m proud of myself in that regard. But I did end up meeting some ladies that I hopefully can play with sometime soon! Dallas Mahj Club are instructors through Oh My Mahjong. If you are curious about learning mahjong near you, I suggest using their instructor finder to see if there is someone close by. While these aren’t the only people that can help you learn the game, it’s a great place to start. Plus having taken their classes myself, the style in which everything was taught made sense. They made it easy to pick up on. Many instructors tend to travel as well, so you can always help to set something up in your community to help yourself and others learn the game!
Mahjong isn’t the easiest game in the world – there are a lot of elements to it and it’s a game you need to practice to get better at. I think finding a instructor/class is a great way to start the process – and you may want to take 101 more than once depending on how you feel.
Needless to say after my experience – I am hooked! I really hope I can find some people to play with regularly. And I’d like to show the ropes to friends and family members. That being said I’ve already been poking around online to find my dream set! Mahjong is not the most affordable hobby – I tend to get into expensive activities lol. But I think there is a good compromise to make, especially when starting out.
Today I wanted to share some fun mahjong finds in case you’re in the market for pieces yourself. Or maybe you know someone who may enjoy it!
Teal Bottom Tile Set
This is the perfect set if you’re starting out and aren’t ready to splurge quite yet! Plus the pop of color still helps to make things fun.
Clear Acrylic Tile Pushers
I love the look of these clear acrylic pushers! They’re great since they will go with any mat or tile set you may get. Because we all know part of the fun of mahjong is the aesthetic. 😉
Oh My Mahjong Bundle
If you want to dive in and get a beautiful matching set – this bundle is perfect! It has everything you need to play. Plus it is so pretty.
Line Finder
A line finder is definitely a must-have! They make your life so much easier in remembering what line you want to focus on. Many companies sell these but there are some cute custom options on Etsy.
Mahjong Tile Bag
I love this patch bag to store tiles in! This is so much more convenient for on-the-go than a tile box.
Mat from Oh My Mahjong
I love the Oh My Mahjong mats not only because they’re pretty, but they also have great reminders on them. This is helpful for any player, but especially for beginners like myself.
American Mah Jongg for Beginners
This is a great idea to get if you’re new to mahjong! Keep it nearby while you’re playing, or study it to memory.
Tile Shufflers
These tile shufflers are a great price! While not necessity, definitely a “nice to have.” And for under $10 they’re definitely worth it!
Instructional Mahjong Tablecloth
If you really want to be the mahjong hostess with the mostess, invest in this gorgeous tablecloth! It acts as your mat and has tons of great reminders on it.
Mahjong Cheese Knives
If you’re looking for a great mahj-themed hostess gift look no further! These cheese knives are so cute and the perfect thing to put out for mahjong girl’s nights!

Maybe this will serve even as a gift guide for some of you out there this holiday season! If you have been thinking about learning to play – I highly recommend it. It is a ton of fun and an activity one can enjoy during all stages of life.
Cheers!
